What is the future of MIDI on iOS?

Times are changing, the power of the devices that we carry around is increasing every month, be it from apps being released/updated or new hardware add-ons, the landscape is constantly evolving. There is a big movement happening right now, and I can safely say this is only the beginning. This movement is reshaping how we will use our iOS devices.Apple has some pretty strict limitations on the sandboxes that apps use to store their data. Inter-app communication has been traditionally locked down to copy and pasting audio between apps, and not to knock that system, because I typically don’t buy apps that don’t have it, but this new movement looks to remove some of those barriers, and make real-time interoperability between apps a reality.

This movement, which at the moment is nameless began when 2 developers Rolf Wöhrmann from Tempo Rubato and Sebastian Dittmann from Audanika began a conversation about trying to control NLog on the same device with SoundPrism via MIDI. They got it working and are already submitting their apps to the Appstore, but it doesn’t stop there. They have gathered a growing list of developers and started a Google group for the conversation. They are now thinking as a group and are on their way to develop a standard. They still need a name and a logo, but this initial push for a new Virtual MIDI between devices is very exciting.

This is similar to what we have only been able to achieve on two devices with technologies like WIST, and OSC, but is achieved on the same device, which makes it more appealing to budget minded musicians.

If you are a developer and would like to join the conversation, here is the link to the Google group: Open Music App Collaboration

Developers

Here is a list of the confirmed developers who are researching this technology and may implement it into their apps.

Keep an eye here for more developments in this ground breaking movement.
